Time really feels like it’s flying now. I’m readily losing track of which week of pregnancy I’m in, and in need of a midwife appointment to find out for sure. I’m feeling much much heavier now coming towards the end of the 2nd trimester, and the smallest things things are starting to become a bit more of a challenge. Even getting in and out of a chair brings with it a hmpf noise more associated with an elderly chap! It’s certainly not attractive. Despite religious weekly pilates sessions the stomach muscles are almost completely non existent now too. Trying to get up from lying down conjures up an image akin to a turtle stuck on its back which requires an elaborate side roll to eventually get out of! Someone told me the other day that the baby triples in size in the third trimester, so no wonder it everything becomes more of a struggle!
The movement from the baby is incredible now though, especially in the last week or so. Though it can sometimes feel like getting sucker punched in the bladder it’s so so worth it, and reminds me every day I’m growing an actual life. In itself this feels incredible. I’m glad I’m taking the time to think about stuff like that this pregnancy, and also give myself some credit for it. Though rest isn’t exactly forthcoming with a toddler and a job and everything else, im still loving weekly yoga sessions which push me to be more mindful, and focus on my breathing. Also starting to look more fully in to doing some hypnobirthing sessions. I hear only good things, and figure anything which can contribute to a calmer birth is a bonus! Now I just need to convince my husband, who is currently definitely a sceptic!
In terms of the baby movement, I saw some pretty disturbing “advice” shared on instagram the other day, unfortunately from a massive brand. This advice said that you shouldn’t worry if you had reduced fetal movement in the latter stages of pregnancy, as it’s totally normal to feel less movement towards the end, because the baby has less room! This is of course complete nonsense. Talk to any doctor or midwife and they’ll tell you so. Sure there’s less room in there by the end, that’s natural, but nature hasn’t evolved so far and then stopped short to offer no room to manoeuvre in there!!! So if you have any concerns at all about the movement you’re feeling at any stage then contact your midwife or maternity unit! If you want any actual medical advice, or a bit more information too, then take a look at Kicks Count which is a charity dedicated to empowering mums to be with the right information about their pregnancy. I know from experience that with increased movement can come more anxiety, as with my first baby and this I’ve had days of less movement when I’ve been worried. With my first baby I took myself to the day assessment unit at least once, if not twice to be monitored. Luckily all was well, but that was the only thing which could ease my mind so it’s we’ll worth it. No midwife is going to be annoyed that you checked!
Style wise I’m mixing up the maternity and non maternity now. I’ve only needed to wear a maternity dress once as going to a funeral so I just needed a shitty black dress for the occasion. Other than that all my non-maternity dresses are still serving me well. I also got some dresses in a new store to launch in the UK Reserved which I love. They have lots of great stuff for pregnancy, and I’d definitely recommend checking them out.
In terms of jeans I’m still wearing my topshop skinnies a lot, but have also got some new look mum jeans which are great as the higher cut is definitely more practical, and you don’t spend all day yanking them up. One thing I’d say about jeans is it’s worth looking around for the style that works for you with a bump as it won’t necessarily be the style you’re used to wearing. Shop around!
I’ve also got some nice check work trousers from Topshop which I’m really happy with but not quite sure how long in to the pregnancy they’ll last. I love that Topshop are adapting their main range to do maternity versions, but they’re very much suited for the early trimesters, or perhaps if you have the teeniest football sized bump. It’s a shame, as some of their stuff is gorgeous. I love the humbug striped dress below, but I knew within weeks it wouldn’t fit so I didn’t end up buying it.
Whilst really having some fun with fashion and the bump now, I’m also getting some rather undesirable side effects of pregnancy. Not sure if it’s the hormones or the pregnancy vitamins (didn’t realise this was a thing til I did some googling) but I have pretty bothersome constipation which is making me super uncomfortable. It’s not something I experienced during my last pregnancy (after though, my god that was hideous, if I can give you any tip for post birth, it’s to take away whatever laxatives the hospital is willing to offer out), so I wasn’t really prepared. The fact that it’s now led to the dreaded haemorrhoids had me literally in tears in boots the other day (again probably largely the hormones!). For all the joy and loveliness which comes with growing a human, there sure are some sucky side effects!!!
I’ve now been to the midwife, and turns out I’m 28 weeks, and so ‘lost’ a week somewhere along the way. It’s a little daunting to be in the final trimester now, as I know this bit will probably go more quickly than I’m ready for. Though at least we’re more or less prepared in terms of the big stuff. We do need to make a call on a buggy though. Any suggestions for one which works really well with a buggy board/ somewhere the older one can perch? I think the nesting is going to kick in very soon, especially as everyone has started their Christmas count downs, and with this baby being due just 3 days before Christmas it all feels a little close for comfort (though very exciting too).
All was well with the midwife, measurements all good, and a nice strong heartbeat so very happy with that! She did tell me I’m not eating enough which is baffling as I feel like I’m eating like a horse, and feeling the effects of that everywhere… But I guess midwife’s orders and all that, just need to make sure it’s fruit and not croissants making up those extra calories!!
